Blogging Behind The Scenes: July Blog Progress Report

I’d like to share with you the behind the scenes operation of starting a blog and maintaining it.  I’m hoping that eventually this little blog of mine will be my business.  But, that is still in the works, and I am still focusing on writing good content and building an email list of friends and fans…known as Frans! 🙂

If you have a blog, or having always wanted to start one, my hope is that this post and all my Blogging Posts will help you as you build and start your blogs.  So, let’s get started…

I decided to start my blog, in June of 2016, to share my story.  I want to encourage and empower other women going through infertility, miscarriage, and loss because sometimes our journey to motherhood takes a bit longer than expected. So, here on my blog, I share my extra long journey with the world in hopes of being a helpful and supportive voice.

As the months have gone on, my blog has slowly evolved into a much larger “project” than I could have ever imagined.

Now, I enjoy writing not only about my spiritual and emotional journey to start a family, but also DIY Pinterest Projects, Travel, our Bucket Lists & Adventures, Blogging, & more with a sprinkle of inspiration and faith too.  It’s kind of taken on a life of its own & I completely caught the “blogging bug” so to speak.

Let’s go over my goals for June & July to see how I did, shall we?

June & July Blogging Goals:

1. Post Consistently & Often– Ideally, I would like to post 2 times per week, on Tuesday and Thursday.  And, I’m now trailing a weekly email to my email list instead of a monthly newsletter.  I’m hoping to grow a more engaged email “Fran” group, as I’m preparing to launch my first ebook this fall!  This posting schedule is still a work in progress as I work full-time as a nurse, and am still trying to adjust to life on day shift after spending 10 years on night shift.

2. Pin 25+ Pins a Day on Tailwind– I’ve been using Tailwind for a few months now to schedule my pins, and I even tried a new Pinning Strategy with my most viral group boards.  It seems to be helping my traffic, as most of my traffic comes from Pinterest now.  If you haven’t tried Tailwind, you need to. They make it super easy to schedule pins and they even evaluate your Pinterest profile and tell you where you need improvements.  Pinterest can be a great tool to use for bloggers.

4. Update Website– I updated my categories and added opt-in boxes to my sidebar this month.  I’ve seen an increase in email subscribers since adding those boxes, and I think the website looks much more professional.  I also updated my About Me description on my sidebar, since the blog has evolved since I last updated it.

5. Update Pinterest Boards– I spend nearly a week updating my Pinterest Boards with keywords, and added descriptions to each board.  This has helped my blog traffic immensely.  Since Pinterest is basically like a search engine, I added in words and phrases that readers would type into a google search to find my content.  I learned all of this in a Pinterest Webinar with Melyssa Griffin. I highly recommend checking her out!  She’s a blogging genius!

6. Run my 1st Facebook Ad– I ran a sponsored Facebook Ad for $10 promoting my New Baby Checklist Printable.  It helped me gain email subscribers, and a few new readers.  I didn’t see a huge jump in traffic, but I’m still interested to try it again.

7. Celebrate the Blog’s 1st Birthday– hooray!  I made it!!  I’ve worked so hard on this website, and I was so excited to celebrate with you all. I had a lot of birthday festivities planned, but then we had an unexpected death in the family that took priority.  But, I’m still thankful for this wonderful first year of blogging.

8. Create a Resource Library– This is still a work in progress, but I have a Printable, my New Baby Checklist, a Color Run Printable, and a Cultivate Email Book Club.  I can’t wait to add more!

9. Sign up for ConvertKit– I changed email service providers in June.  I was using a free program, but had heard from fellow bloggers that there were glitches in their system. I switched to ConverKit, and have seen a major increase in email subscribers.

August #’s Goals:

Total Pageviews: 5000 {3925 in July}

Users: 3000

Email Subscribers: 150

Facebook: 800

Instagram: 850

Pinterest: 1800

Twitter: 400

$$$- anything 🙂

I know that some of these numbers aren’t as impressive as other bloggers, but I’m hoping to share with you an honest reflection of what months of hard work as a blogger looks like.

Most of the beginning of my blogging journey included a lot of learning and setting up my site.  So, not a lot of time was spent promoting.

I suggest Abby Lawson’s Building A Framework as a wonderful resource for bloggers who are just starting out, or for bloggers who’ve been at it a while and need to refocus.  She has built a tremendous website called, Just A Girl And Her Blog.  I refer to her Blogging Handbook often to see where I need to “up the ante” so to speak.

Her Handbook challenges me, and has helped me build this website from a place where only family and friends would visit, to a website that is rapidly growing and reaching many more people.

If you’ve been dreaming about starting your own blog, first things first, you’ll need a self-hosted WordPress Blog.

The term “self-hosted” is a little tricky, because it really means that you pay for your website name typically through a hosting company, like BlueHost.  You then own your blog, and your hosting company manages the behind the scenes business that bloggers don’t want to worry about.

I’ve loved working with BlueHost, and for a small fee of $3.95/month {I paid for 3 years up front}, I have peace of mind knowing that my website will run smoothly.  Their step-by-step instructions took this fearful, non-techy gal & made her into a website creating machine.  Ok…maybe I shouldn’t say that. 🙂 But, there’s no way that I could’ve set up my website without BlueHost.

Type your dream blog name below to see if it’s still available for purchase.  Go ahead and get started on this dream…

You are an inspiration! I love reading about your progress. I had downloaded Abby Lawson the last time I read one of your posts, but it got buried in my “to-do” pile. I will bring it back up to the top!

Awww, thank you, Erin! The thing I love about Abby is she’s a normal person just like us, and her blogging book is easy to follow and understand. I hope you enjoy it!
