Blogging Behind The Scenes: May Progress Report

Posted in Blogging
on June 13, 2017

Some bloggers call these kinds of posts “Income Reports” where they share how they are maintaining their blogging business.  I really enjoy reading these posts, because I learn so much about how to maintain a good website.  These posts give me a front row seat into fellow bloggers lives, & I learn how they run their blogs and earn money.  These posts also help me as a new blogger know where to focus my time and energy.

So, without further adieu, I’d like to share with you my May Progress Report.  I actually could call this post an Income Report since last month I actually made “real money”.  But, until my blogging income is more consistent, I’ll stick to calling these “Progress Reports”.

I hope that you are able to learn something new here today about how to start and maintain a website.  It’s always a work in progress…pun intended!  And, I’m constantly learning new things & trying new methods.  So, here goes….

I decided to start my blog, only 11 short months ago, to share my story.  I want to encourage and empower other women going through infertility, miscarriage, and loss because sometimes our journey to motherhood takes a bit longer than expected. So, I here on my blog, I share my extra long journey with the world in hopes of being a helpful and supportive voice.

As the months have gone on, my blog has slowly evolved into a much larger “project” than I could have ever imagined.

Now, I enjoy writing not only about my spiritual and emotional journey to start a family, but also DIY Pinterest Projects, Travel, our Bucket Lists & Adventures, Blogging, & more with a sprinkle of inspiration and faith too.  It’s kind of taken on a life of its own & I completely caught the “blogging bug” so to speak.

Let’s go over my goals for May to see how I did, shall we?

May Blogging Goals:

1. Post Consistently & Often– Ideally, I would like to post 2-3 times per week, which I did not do this last month.  I would like to post every Tuesday, Thursday, & possibly again on the weekend or do a Facebook LIVE video instead.  The goal is to have exposure with my audience every couple of days.  The weekends are still my highest traffic days, which is why I’d like to do at least a little something on the weekends.

2. Increase My Tweeting– I’ve “upped the ante” on Twitter this month, and I’ve seen some positive feedback.  I’ve even had some of my blogging idols {like Emily Ley & Lara Casey} like and retweet my tweets.  My goal was to tweet at least 5 times on the day a new post was up, and that seemed to increase traffic to my website.

3. Join a Tailwind Tribe– I’ve been hearing more and more buzz about Tailwind Tribes.  I’m hoping to up my Pinterest game with on of these mysterious tribes!  I have yet to join one.  Maybe this will move over to my June Goals list.

4. Update Website– This is still a work in progress, unfortunately.  Ideally, I’d like to update not only my categories, about me page, & sidebar, but I’d also like to improve the look and functionality of the site.  I’d like to include an Amazon store, offer freebies, have a resource library, and update my branding and logo.  So stay tuned for more updates on this big goal.

5. Write 1st Guest Post– I was all set up to write my first guest post last month, but I decided it wasn’t in my best interest.  I was struggling with finding time to write my own posts, including a sponsored post, that I just didn’t feel that the time it would’ve taken me to write the guest post was well-served on another site.  Maybe one day in the future another opportunity will come along.  Fingers crossed.

6. Write 1st Sponsored Post– Yay, yay….YAY!!!  I wrote my first sponsored post this last month, and I loved it.  It got very good responses from my readers, and other bloggers.  And, it wasn’t a hoax…I got paid…in actual real $$$!  I can’t wait to do another sponsored post.

7. Take An Instagram Class- This didn’t happen…darn.

8. Figure Out Google+- And…this still remains a mystery to me.  Maybe one day I’ll spend time figuring out what Google + is all about.

9. Promote 2-3 Pins– I’ve heard that promoting a couple of pins every month really boosts traffic.  This goal also had to be delayed.  Hopefully this month I’ll promote a couple of pins and let you know how it goes.

10. Create A Resource Library– My goal is to have a password sensitive Resource Library for my email subscribers filled with guides, printable handbooks, printable quotes & verses featuring my watercolor floral logo, and more.  So, stay tuned!

11. Apply To More Affiliates– I applied to Linqia, and am just waiting to get accepted into my first campaign.  What affiliates do you like most?  I’m always looking for good ideas!

12. Explore Google Adsense– Nope.  I slashed it off my to do list.  All I keep hearing is that you don’t make much money with these adds, and it just bogs down your site.  This may be an option for me later when I have for monthly readers.

13. Update 5 More Old Posts– I never got around to doing this.  It’s definitely on the goal list for June.

14. Let’s Talk Numbers– Here’s what I’d like to accomplish number-wise in May…

Total Pageviews: 5000 {made it to 3369, which I’m still happy with.  Less than last month though.}

Sessions: 3000 {2510 total for May}

Users: 3000 {2141 total for May}

Email Subscribers: 100 {only 39…I have plans to improve this though!}

Facebook: 600 {Got up to 560 in May…not bad!}

Instagram: 300 {woah…596!!  Hip hip, hooray!}

Pinterest: 1600 {1646…knocked it outta the park!}

Twitter: 50 {142…this is the biggest surprise of all!!}

$$$- $200 {$177.99 #awesome-sauce}

I know that some of these numbers aren’t as impressive as other bloggers, but I’m hoping to share with you an honest reflection of what 10 months of hard work as a blogger could look like.

Most of the beginning of my blogging journey included a lot of learning and setting up my site.  So, not a lot of time was spent promoting.

I suggest Abby Lawson’s Building A Framework as a wonderful resource for bloggers who are just starting out, or for bloggers who’ve been at it a while and need to refocus.  She has built a tremendous website called, Just A Girl And Her Blog.  I refer to her Blogging Handbook often to see where I need to “up the ante” so to speak.

Her Handbook challenges me, and has helped me build this website from a place where only family and friends would visit, to a website that is rapidly growing and reaching many more people.

As an incentive to get more email subscribers, I like to include a monthly Spotify Playlist in my Newsletter.  I am going to be trying some new methods to grow my email subscription list in June, and if this continues to be popular I’ll keep paying for Spotify.  Otherwise, I’ll cancel my subscription & use that $10 for something else on the blog.

And, my quarterly P.O. Box fee was due.  I need a P.O. Box for my newsletters.

Currently, I am using the Free Programs on PicMonkey and Canva to make my Pinterest Images, and using the Free email service through MailChimp.

Well, I think that’s a hefty amount of goals for the blog this month, don’t you?  I better get started!

If you’ve been dreaming about starting your own blog, first things first, you’ll need a self-hosted WordPress Blog.

The term “self-hosted” is a little tricky, because it really means that you pay for your website name typically through a hosting company, like BlueHost.  You then own your blog, and your hosting company manages the behind the scenes business that bloggers don’t want to worry about.

I’ve loved working with BlueHost, and for a small fee of $3.95/month {I paid for 3 years up front}, I have peace of mind knowing that my website will run smoothly.  Their step-by-step instructions took this fearful, non-techy gal & made her into a website creating machine.  Ok…maybe I shouldn’t say that. 🙂 But, there’s no way that I could’ve set up my website without BlueHost.

Type your dream blog name below to see if it’s still available for purchase.  Go ahead and get started on this dream…

What goals have you set for you blog this month?  What successes are you proud of last month?  Please share how your blogging journey is going with us in the comments.  And, if you have any questions about blogging, please feel free to ask.
