Bucket List: Drink Coffee at Luke’s Diner

As I nestle into my comfy couch, with my second cup ‘o joe for the day and a brownie from Luke’s Diner, I am reminded how bucket list opportunities sometimes “pop up” when we least expect. And that is exactly what happened today.

If you haven’t heard yet, or been bombarded with pictures and status updates on social media, several coffee shops around the country today turned into Luke’s Diner from Gilmore Girls.

Thanks to Netflix for making every Stars Hollow Fan’s dreams come true today, by encouraging us to connect with our inner Lorelei and enjoy free cups of coffee from Luke’s.

{I’ve had this song stuck in my head all day!}

I’ve loved Gilmore Girls for as long as I can remember. I relate to Lorelei in more ways than I can count, including obviously our love and need for coffee.   And Luke’s Diner was to Lorelei, what Starbucks is to me.  A home away from home…the place to enjoy happiness in a cup!

{Here’s a tour of Luke’s according to Kirk}

My sister and I stood in line at Avalon International Bread Company and Coffee Shop, AKA Midtown Detroit’s Luke’s Diner, for an hour and a half.  The line to get into “Luke’s” was wrapped around the corner.  I don’t think I’ve ever waited in line for coffee that long, but it was definitely worth it.

When we finally made it inside, the smell of freshly baked bread and treats filled the air.  We had a plethora of goodies at our fingertips and coffee galore to satisfy our tastebuds.

Our pop up Luke’s Diner was at Avalon International Bread Company, who’s motto is,

“Eat Well.  Do Good.”

Avalon offers several local products and organic selections of breads, cookies, brownies, sandwiches, and pizzas.  They also have a wide array of coffee including lattes, mochas, macchiatos, and the like, as well as their own house made blend.

It was little bit fancier than Luke’s, I’d say!  But scrumptious!  And, dare I say, I think Luke would have approved….except for all the cell phone usage.  He would have certainly been irritated with all the snapchatting going on!

My sister and I opted for mochas in Luke’s Diner replica cups….which of course I went nuts over!  How stinking cute?! And, coffee and chocolate were made to go together.  They’re a match made in Heaven…just like Luke and Lorelei!

The staff at Avalon in Midtown Detroit, were exceptional.  They played the part well, and sported Luke’s aprons and hats.  They did an amazing job with the hundreds of us who lined up today.  Kudos to you all.

We enjoyed our sandwiches and coffee outside in the sunshine.  I was decked to the nines in all my favorite fall wear including riding boots, and it ended up being 80 degrees!!  What the what?!  It’s October, right?! Oh, well.  It’s Michigan…I should have known better!

My sister and I thouroghly enjoyed our Gilmore Girls Day.  And, I can’t wait to watch the new (and the old) episodes on Netflix.

Thank you, Netflix, for making our dreams come true…in more ways than one!

{Here’s a sneak peek at the new episodes!  Get ready for all the feels…grab a tissue or two!}
