Bucket List: Spend the Day in Providence, Rhode Island

I’ve been promising to share the details of our New England Road Trip with you, and here it is…the first of many posts about this awesome trip! This Road Trip ended up being the pinnacle of our Pre-Baby Bucket List Busting Year!  Friends and family were so excited to share in this, and travel with us via social media, on our 8 state, 13 day, 3000+ mile journey through New England.  I had friends begging me to share with them the itinerary and the details, on none other than a blog such as this, and here we are finally!  So, let’s talk about our unforgettable day in Rhode Island.  Enjoy…

Our time in Rhode Island was actually day 10 and 11 of our New England Road Trip.  We had just spent the day before exploring Plymouth Massachusetts.  We’d seen Plymouth Rock, and boarded the Mayflower II in Plymouth Harbor.  We’d eaten some world renowned by the Food Network “clam chowdah”, and watched the sunset over the Monument to the Forefathers.  We were feeling oh so American, and could barely wait to cook Thanksgiving dinner for our families.  History had come alive, and Adam especially was soaking it up!

We had just left the Mirbeau Inn and Spa in the Pinehills where we’d had one of the best nights sleep of our entire trip in a purple princess room (it even had a claw foot tub ?).  We woke up to the sun peaking through the window of our balcony overlooking a Monet inspired garden, ate a French inspired breakfast including fresh from the oven croissants and cappuccino, and lounged in the unbelievable spa where we dipped our feet in the lava rock essential oil infused foot pool in the center of the relaxation room!

{Whew!  That’s a lot of adjectives!  I promise to share all the details of our amazing adventure in Plymouth very soon.}

Needless to say, we were reluctant to leave Plymouth.  But, we couldn’t wait to explore Rhode Island.

I became fascinated with Rhode Island when I became addicted to a medical show called “Providence” that was on back in the 1990’s. You know the show, dont ya?  It was about a curly haired doctor who lived in a big White House in Providence, Rhode Island.  I loved the opening song with because it showed New England in the fall with the steeply white churches and the beautifully colored leaves.  I’ll see if I can find it on YouTube…

Anyways, I loved that show.  Any medical show back in the 90’s was my thing, hence my career choice. ? Plus, the main character had beautiful curly hair, which I admired.  I was still coming to terms with what to do with my hot mess curly hair, so she inspired me with her bold display of curls.

So, as ridiculous as it sounds, I’d wanted to visit Rhode Island for literally years because of that TV show.  And, let me tell you.  Rhode Island did not disappoint.

Most of the research that we did for the planning of this epic road trip, was done on none other than…take a wild guess….yes, Pinterest!

And, per the “experts” on Pinterest, the main attraction to see while meandering through Providence, Rhode Island is the zoo. We were totally down with that. We are definitely zoo people.  Our first date was at the zoo, and he proposed at the zoo. Hence, why we are zoo people.

We couldn’t wait to spend the morning at the Roger Williams Park Zoo.  Our official itinerary for the day had us…eating breakfast at the Mirbeau, exploring the gardens and the spa, leaving the Mirbeau to make it to the zoo in Rhode Island by the time they opened at 10 am, leave the zoo around 1 or 2 pm, eat chowder and doughboys at Iggy’s on the shore of the Atlantic, do the 3.5 mile long Cliff Walk along the mansion lined bluff in Newport, and then check into our home for the night The Ocean House.

But, once we got to the zoo, we were having so much fun seeing the animals and the Jack ‘o Lantern Spectacular, that we ended up staying longer than we’d (or I ?) had planned.  Oh, well, I guess another trip to Rhode Island is in order.  The chicken tenders lunch at the zoo, I’m sure, paled in comparison to eating chowder at a picnic table on an ocean cliff.  And, unfortunatly, we missed trying dough boys, which are like a funnel cake, at Iggys. It’s a Rhode Island delicacy or something.  So, we must go back. ?

But, in all seriousness, it was so nice to relax and enjoy a quieter afternoon at the zoo.  We didn’t rush.  We took lots of pictures. We talked to the zookeepers. We were nearly scared to death by a tamarin monkey who looked like a bearded old man, and discovered firsthand that indeed bintarongs do smell like popcorn!  We had an afternoon to remember.

We stared in amazement at the hundreds of jack o’ lanterns that were spread throughout the zoo!  Their Jack ‘O Lantern spectacular was an unforgettable sight to behold!  It put me in the spirit of Halloween, that’s for sure!

After a leisurely day at the zoo, we drove to our final stop of the day…The Ocean House.  The drive along the coast was beautiful.  I day dreamed about living in one of those gorgeous New England mansions on the ocean….oh the fun I’d have decorating it! ? And then when we pulled up to The Ocean House, our spectacular seaside home for the night…well, it took my breath away.

 A stay at The Ocean House should be on everyone’s bucket list.  It deserves its own blog post, but I’ll tease you with some quick photos…

My hubby found this photo on Travel & Leisure’s Instagram.  It completely encompassed the Rhode Island feel I was hoping for, and The Ocean House was so different from the other amazing places we’d stayed at along our road trip.

It was a splurge to say the least, but well worth it.  Just as soon as I’d think there was no way for the trip to get any better, another wonderful surprise would be on the horizon.
