How to add extra coziness, warmth, and Christmas cheer to your home.

I absolutely go googly-eyed over this time of year!   Between all the Christmas decorations and Sparkly lights, I can hardly contain my excitement for the impending Christmas season.  There are so many activities and family gatherings I look forward to every Christmas. But quite honestly, some of my most treasured moments, are cozy nights at home by the fireplace, hot chocolate in hand, Christmas lights glowing, carols playing in the background, and cookies baking in the oven.

One tradition I look forward to every November, is my trip to Somerset Mall (which is very close to my house…so it’s hardly a trip 😉), to get a new holiday coffee at Starbucks in “the red cup”, get a sneak peak at Santa in his castle, and then lose my mind over Christmas decorations at Pottery Barn.

 I have fallen in love with the cozy relaxed, yet classic style, that exudes in Pottery Barn.  I think I have over a hundred of their catalogs piling up in baskets all over my house.  I’m obsessed, to say the least! 😬

There’s one thing that Pottery Barn has mastered, which is why I love that store so much, and it is creating a cozy Christmas Home.  I’ve learned from their designers how to add just a little more cozy Christmas magic to any space in your home, and I’d love to share these “secrets” with you.

So, pull up a comfy chair, grab your mocha, and put on some of your favorite Christmas music, and let’s get to designing our cozy Christmas homes together!

(I’ll be sharing some of my favorite Christmas songs from Pentatonix throughout this post!  Like a personal post playlist, if you will. If you’ve never heard of them…well, golly gee you’re in for a treat!  I don’t know how it’s possible le for human voices to do what they do! 😊)

{Step #1: Pick A Warm & Christmasy Color Pallette}

Deciding on a color scheme you love, will help guide you through the decorating process during Christmas time.  I love incorporating red.  I find it so festive.  And I mix in silvers, whites, golds, and now a hint of black!

Some other Decorating officianados out there that I know and love, stick to a more monochromatic color scheme.  They use all silver or all golds.  And, I know others, who have children who incorporate a whole host of colors into their holiday decorating.

You really can’t go wrong with whatever color scheme you choose.  Maybe you’ll want to mix it up from year to year, or maybe you have numerous areas in your home that you decorate using different themes. Use whatever color scheme you’ve chosen as your starting point for picking pieces to put in your home to make it come alive for the season.

{Step 2: Add A Variety of Texture & Patterns}

This is where the rubber meets the road in the Christmas decorating world, as far as I’m concerned.  Adding texture and design is so easy at Christmas time.  Based on your color scheme, look for decorative pillows and throw blankets that fit your theme, and smother your couches and chairs with them.  They add so much coziness and practicality, don’t they?  I mean, who wouldn’t want to nestle into an inviting couch covered in pillows and blankets for a warm winters nap, right?!

You can incorporate various patterns and textures like plaids, fur, cable knit sweater patterns, velvet, Christmas designs and even wording with just those 2 items, and then carry over the patterns you’ve chosen into other areas of your home for a cohesive feel.

For instance, I’m in love with the buffalo check patterned pillow covers at Potterybarn, that I can then incorporate into my tree using the buffalo checked bulb ornaments.

Having a few elements you love, and carrying out that theme throughout your entire home, creates that designer look that we all long for.

{Step 3: Incorporate Warm Lighting}

I have to admit, I’m a white light kinda gal.  I can appreciate colorful lights on our annual “drive around town and look at Christmas lights” date night.  But, in my own home, I love the warm glow and ambiance that white lights give.

I quite literally smother my Christmas tree in white lights, and add lit garland wherever possible.  To me, there’s nothing more cozy than enjoying a movie together on the couch while snow falls outside our windows, and being surrounded by the twinkle of white Christmas lights.  It’s such a magical time of year, isn’t it?!

I also love incorporating the soft glow of candlelight.  I love Pottery Barn’s Flickering Flameless Candles.  They add the effect of cozy candlelight, without the added danger of knocking them over and starting a fire. Red is my favorite color during this season, but not if it’s on a fire engine that’s pulling up to my house cause I set the house ablaze! 😂

What kind of light elements do you like to incorporate into your home during the holidays?  Maybe you like dancing colorful lights, or the peaceful hue of blue lights on your Christmas tree.  Whatever it is that makes you and your family feel that extra spark (no pun intended 😉) of magic this holiday season, include that concept into your design plan.

{Step 4: Fill Your Space With Holiday Scents}

Are there any scents that remind you of Christmas?  Maybe it’s the scent of pine that brings back memories of chopping down a tree at the Christmas Tree Farm.  Or, maybe it’s  the scent of roasted almonds that reminds you of winter festivals, snow boots, and mittens.

We can add these same memory filled scents to our homes to add even more coziness.  I, for instance, love the smell of pine and evergreen in my home at Christmas.  And, this collection of scented goodies at Pottery Barn took me right back to the excitement of Christmas morning.

 I also love hanging a real wreath on my front door, so that when anyone enters my home at Christmastime, they are immediately welcomed with the smell of fresh pine.

{Step 5: Add Some Sparkle & Shimmer}

‘Tis the season for glitter, and my husband can’t stand it! 😂  I can’t seem to not buy Christmas cards without glitter, so it gets everywhere.  But, I love it.  I like to add a little sparkle and shimmer here and there throughout my home.  It reminds me of freshly fallen snow, which is so beautiful.

I add white glittery ornaments to our tree, and silver mercury glass votives to our mantles.  I fill glass vases with faux snow to add a simple and inexpensive touch of whimsy.

I also fill silver frames with photos of family, and incorporate many mirrored elements around the house which reflect the glow of candles and lights so elegantly.  This is the ultimate in cozy, to me.

One day, I hope to be able to hang this Eagen Mirror from Pottery Barn in our home. The many beveled edges and facets on the mirrors reflect light so beautifully.  The reflected light looks like it’s dancing.  Heart. Be. Still.  Maybe I should add the mirror to my wishlist for Santa! 😉

{Step 6: Add a Touch of Christmas to Each Room}

Adding a touch of Christmas to all of the rooms in your house, will add even more warmth.  It doesn’t have to be much.  It could be a simple Christmas cookie jar on the counter in your kitchen, or some Christmas hand towels in your bathroom.  That could be just enough to cozy up that space, and make your home even more special for your family and friends as you gather together over the holiday season.

{Step 7: Make Lots of Memories}

It really is sad that the Christmas season lasts for such a short period of time.  The most important thing you can do to create a cozy home this Christmas season, is to fill it with joy and love.  Making memories with your loved ones, and remembering the amazing reason for the season, is why we celebrate.

As I unpack all my Christmas decorations every year, I become giddy with anticipation for what’s to come….gingerbread houses with the kids, ugly Christmas sweater parties with friends, baking cookies with my hubby at midnight, watching Christmas movies in my pjs, the Live Nativity and candlelit Christmas Eve service at church, wrapping gifts for all our family and friends, and so much more.

Spending this season with the people we hold dear to us, is the most cozy thing of all.
