Late Summer Nights at the Zoo

Life lately has included lots of my favorite Date Days which includes Late Summer Nights at the Detroit Zoo.  Every Wednesday night in the summer, the Detroit Zoo stays open late, there is a concert in the park, & we get to see the animals get ready for bed.

We love going to the zoo. In fact, our first date was at the Detroit Zoo.  I think I sealed the deal, when I suggested we go to the zoo for our first official date to my “Animal Planet watching, Sarah McClaughlin listening soon-to-be-husband” back in the day.

We love visiting the zoo during all seasons. But, Adam’s favorite being the winter.  Yes, he’s nuts.  It takes a lot to get me to go in the wintertime, but it is gorgeous when it’s not -20 degrees.

In return for not going in the frigid cold, I’ve tried to embrace going in the summer.  You see, summer and I don’t get along very well. I hate sweltering heat, and “glistening” AKA sweating like I’m in the Serengeti.  So, now that the zoo stays open late, I have learned to enjoy the heat, and look forward to our Wednesday night dates.

The Detroit Zoo holds so many special memories for us. So, it was no surprise to me, when he chose this special place to pop the question.  Yes, on a dreadfully hot day (once again I’m repulsed by summer ?) in August 2009, he got down on one knee on a nature path at the front of the zoo, and asked me to marry him.  Our only witness was a little chipmunk sitting on a log nearby.  It was precious!

{Obviously, I said yes…you can read about our Destination Wedding Here}

Over the years I’ve learned so much about the animals, and have grown to love getting zoology lessons from my hubby every time we’re there.  I think the inner child in him comes out…the kid who would study his Zoobooks Magazine that came in the mail every month; the kid who would set up zoos with his plastic animals as a boy and charge admission (smart ?); and the guy who literally cried the day The Crocodile Hunter died.  Who are we kidding, we all mourned. RIP Steve Irwin.

And, thanks to my zoo lover (that sounds terrible ?), and our frequent visits, I know the zoo like the back of my hand.  It’s practically our second home!

The Detroit Zoo’s new Polk Penguin Conservation Center was built over the location where he proposed, which at first bummed us out.  But, now after seeing inside of the new Penguin Habitat, I’d say it was a worthy sacrifice.

Usually, our date nights at the zoo, include a coney dog and fries from American Coney, even though we are Lafeyette people. What can I say?  It’s a Michigan thing.  If you’ve never had a Coney, come to Detroit and we’ll show you where to get the best coney dogs. ?

The zoo fountain is always a gorgeous backdrop for photos, especially as the sun sets. And, I love seeing all of the blooming flowers, and knowing that someone out there can keep plants alive. ?

This year, he handed me a penny to make a wish in the fountain.  I wonder what my wish was for?  Any guesses? ?

When we manage to scrounge up a child to go with us, (usually it’s our niece Natalie, since she and Adam are “zoo buddies”) we stop by the carousel for a quick ride.

The kids also love getting their face painted, eating “astronaut ice cream” AKA Dippin’ Dots, and playing on the playground.

The summer concert series is amazing. We look forward to the Verve Pipe concert every year.  The Verve Pipe, in case you don’t know (cause I didn’t ?), was a popular band back in the ’90s.

They did an adorable kids concert before the “adult” rock ‘n roll portion this summer. The lead singer literally had cereal pouring out of his guitar during a song about “loving sugar cereal!”  The kids ate it up…no pun intended!!

I love seeing all the families draped across the lawn, enjoying a picnic dinner, and dancing together as the sun goes down.  Every year, I think about when we have littles, and how much I can’t wait to bring them to the zoo and make memories together.

So, if you live in the area (or will be visiting Michigan soon), and are looking for a fun date night, check out the Detroit Zoo.  The Wild Summer Nights Concert Series is really awesome, but they also have other amazing date night events, like ZooBrew & Wild Holiday Lights.

Plus, thanks to them plowing over our engagement nature path, we now have the largest Penguin Exhibit in the world, which is definitely worth seeing!!  Snow falling in August…yes, you’ll see it all here!

Thanks for stopping by, & don’t forget to get out and enjoy some Vitamin Z! ?
