Life Lately: 4th of July, Cinema In The Street, A Baby Camel, & Nature Walks

Can you believe how fast the summer is flying by?  I can hardly believe that September is around the corner.  This has been a different summer for us.  Adam’s uncle passed away in June, and it kind of rocked the whole family.  This summer we’ve tried to continue doing activities that we know and love, because we know Uncle Doug would want us too.  Even though most days I’m sure we’d rather just lay around the house and be sad.

Here’s some of our happenings over the last few weeks.  I hope you all are enjoying your summer as much as possible too!

Every 4th of July we do the same traditions…which I love!  I am a traditions kind of gal, and 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays (after Christmas and Thanksgiving, of course!).

There is a slight sting in my heart, though, every 4th of July now, because that was my due date with our angel baby.  I remember being so excited that he or she would be born around the 4th of July, and I can’t help but think of that every year.  But, thank God, the sting from our miscarriage lessens each passing year.

We start in the morning with a parade that my sister and I have been going to since we were kids.  There’s about a million fire engines (ok, that’s an exaggeration) that sound their sirens in unison that used to terrify me as a kid, but now just brings tears to my eyes.  I’m such a sap.

Then there’s candy tossed in the street for the kids, theirs plenty of bands and veterans, old-timey cars, and homemade floats.  We have a Tim Horton’s picnic on the curb as we watch the parade.  It’s the absolute best way to start the day, in my opinion.

My niece and I were even interviewed at the parade a couple of years ago.  You can see that interview here!

Go to a parade.

Then we spend the afternoon at Adam’s family swimming, playing volleyball, chit chatting, & scarfing down some of Uncle Mark’s famous BBQ burgers.  It was an absolutely beautiful day, but Uncle Doug who passed away in June was really missed.  It was our first holiday gathering without him, and it was hard.

Our 4th of July ends with lots of fireworks.  And, this year we were on our way home from our family gathering “up north”, and we could see several fireworks displays from the freeway.  It was gorgeous!

We enjoyed Cinema In The Street this summer also.  Brianna loved chalk drawing in the road, and getting a pink ice cream cone.  The movie this year was “A Night In The Museum” with Ben Stiller. We really enjoyed it.  I love sitting outside, feeling the cool summer breeze, and watching the fireflies dance around us.  Outdoor movies in the summer are the best, aren’t they?  Does your community do these kinds of events?  If so, I’d highly recommend going.  They’re typically free and super fun!

Every Wednesday, we enjoy Late Nights At The Detroit Zoo. There’s typically a concert, face painting, a cookout, and activities.  And, this summer, we had a baby camel born!  I’ve taken about a thousand pictures of the flowers, and several videos of the mysterious beavers that finally decided to show their faces.  The zoo is one of our favorite summer date nights.  It is where we got engaged after all.

And, then usually every Sunday night in the summertime, we spend time at Stony Creek Metropark.  We go for a Nature Walk at the Nature Center.  We love looking for turtles, including snapping turtles, along with fish, wild turkeys, and other critters in the woods.  It’s so incredibly peaceful, and I find that on these nature walks I feel like I’m finally able to think and clear my mind.  Being outside is healing, isn’t it?

We love sitting by the lake and watching the sailboats float by.  The sun setting paints the sky in beautiful colors.  It’s a wonderfully relaxing way to start the next week.

What have you enjoyed doing this summer?  Did you take a wonderful vacation, or have you enjoyed new traditions at home with your family?  I’d love to hear how your summer is going.  And, if you’re looking for some last minute ideas to enjoy this summer check out my Ultimate List of Summer Activities!  Happy August!  Enjoy the rest of this summer, friends!
