Living With Purpose: The Art of Finding Your “Why”

Posted in Inspiration
on February 14, 2017

Do you ever wonder what your purpose is?  What you were put on earth to do and be?  I wholeheartedly believe that we all are given special talents and gifts that can be used to help others.  But, what do we do when we are at a loss for how to live with purpose, and focus on our goals and ambitions? Lets explore this together, and take a journey to find our “why”.

This blog post started out as a Blog Diary of what I “accomplished” in January.  But, as I stared at a blank screen, there were no words flowing.  The reason…well, because in January not a lot happened here on the blog.  I barely wrote any posts, I was at a loss for what to write about after the whirlwind of content in December, and I was confused about what to do next.

I had forgotten the reason why I’d started this blog, which was to help other women on their journey to and through motherhood.  I wanted this small space on the World Wide Web to be a place of creative inspiration and joy.

Slowly throughout the month of January, as I connected with other bloggers and slowly began writing again, I began discovering my purpose.  And, it was life changing.

Do you ever feel stuck or unambitious?  You are not alone. It’s hard to regain excitement sometimes when the journey is long, and our intentions become faded. Here’s how I rediscovered my “why” and started living more purposeful…

Live a Purposeful Life & Discover Your "Why"...

There’s A Reason Behind Everything We Do

The first thing that I discovered is that there is a reason behind everything we do.

There’s a reason why I wanted to be a nurse for as a long as I can remember.  I wanted to help people in their most vulnerable time.  I liked “medical stuff”.  I would pride myself in being able to watch disgusting medical shows and be able eat at the same time.  I would read medical encyclopedia’s for fun. {remember encyclopedia’s??!! ?}  And, I would practice first aid on my teddy bears when I was a kid, and go through boxes upon boxes of bandbox aids mending invisible wounds.  But, most of all, I thought nursing was a noble career choice that I could be proud of, and it was one of the best days of my life when I walked across the stage at my pinning ceremony and took my nursing oath.

You see, there is a reason and a purpose for why we choose to pursue things.  Ask yourself what you like about the project, career, or life change you’re making.  What gets you excited about it.  What “lights your fire”?

Live a Life of Purpose today with these simple steps...

When the going gets tough, and the dream is slipping away, hold onto your purpose for starting this journey in the first place.

This was so true for me through my battle with infertility treatments.  Sometimes I had to stop and think, “why am I putting myself through this?  Why do I care so much about having a baby?”  Because as you all know, I’m sure,

“The path to a fulfilled dream is not always an easy one.”

Refocusing on my “why” helps me regain strength to carry on when the going gets rough.

What is the reason/purpose that lies behind the scenes of your dreams and ambitions?  What truly gets you excited and passionate?  Focus on those things.  Write them down, because inevitably there will come a day when you forget and feel lost again.

What Are Your Talents & Gifts That You Can Share With Others

What gifts and talents have you been given, that others find helpful? What do your friends call you for advice about?  What do you get compliments on from others?

This could be something simple… like the way you do your makeup, to the way you decorate your house.  Your gifts/talents could be writing, listening, or comforting others.

“It’s at that time in our life when we recognize our God-given talents and abilities, and embrace them, that we really can begin to fully grasp our purpose.”

Every talent, no matter how big or small, all serve a purpose.  We’re not all going to be fabulous painters {like Bob Ross ?} , or concert violinists, or famous athletes.  And, that’s ok!

Use what you’ve been given to help others, and you will quickly begin to discover your “why”.

We Are All Unique & Special

Along with recognizing and embracing our gifts and talents, we must accept the things that also make us unique and special.

So often we try to fit in, right?  We let society tell us what’s right and wrong, how we should live, how we should look.  But, the things that make us unique, are the things that make us most beautiful.

Discover Your "Why" & Begin Living a Life of Purpose

Sometimes, the things that make us unique and special, are born from a struggle in our life.  Nobody has a perfect story, but there is light in the darkness.  Which leads me to my next point…

Sometimes Your “Why” Comes From A Negative Experience

On the journey to finding your “why”, you have to acknowledge the good, the bad, and the ugly.  And, personally, I think that the sooner that we can be open and honest with each other about our struggles, the happier we’ll be.

It was my 6 year battle with infertility and miscarriage that spawned the idea for Lattes, Lilacs, & Lullabies.  I wanted to turn “lemons into lemonade”, and make something beautiful of my story.  I wanted to comfort and encourage others along their journey to motherhood, because I knew how lonely it could feel.

“Embracing our “why”, also involves accepting the nuances of our life that make us unique, special, and unlike anyone else, and then realizing that there is value in every hurt and disappointment, & victory in every day that we choose to live with purpose.”

Once You Discover Your “Why”, Your Life Will Be Filled With Purpose

As I sat staring at my blank screen, and listening to the stories spinning inside my mind, I realized that no matter what happens with this little blog of mine, that they “why” in which I started it will never change.  And, should never change.

It is my responsibility to remain focused on the purpose of my life right now.  My purpose may change and shift as the years go on, and as new projects and passions come around.  But, for now, I must stay the course.

What is your “why”?  What area in your life has caused you to start searching for purpose and meaning?

Are you attempting to start a new endeavor, but are scared to take the plunge?  Are you on the precipice of starting a new round of fertility treatments, but need a bit of encouragement to take the leap?  Are you searching for a meaningful career, that allows you to use your talents and gifts to help others?  Or, maybe you are a mom in the trenches of toddlerhood or teenager-dom, and need to be reminded of why you wanted to be a mother in the first place?

It’s ok and normal to feel a bit lost at times.  Life is a long journey.  But, can I encourage you to take these steps along with me…

Embrace your talents & gifts, and accept your uniqueness.  Turn your sorrow into purpose, and live the life you were meant to live.  Don’t be afraid to take the plunge, and tackle your dreams head on.

This is such an inspirational and beautiful post! I love all of your Whys–and on the side note of nursing…I respect nurses SO much. They do EVERYTHING, and are the true heroes and heroins in the medical field. Not that doctors aren’t (lord knows I LOVE my doctor), but when I was in labor, it was the nurses that made the experience bearable for me, and it was Patty who made me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich after I delivered my daughter, even though she probably wasn’t supposed to. She was amazing…a nurse I will never forget!

That is such a sweet story about Patty, the nurse. We love hearing stories, and sometimes it’s the simplest things {like a PB&J} that make a huge difference in someone’s day. Thank you for reading. I’m so glad you enjoyed this post.

Wow! Turn your dreams into plans…those 5 words are so true. Finding my purpose has always felt impossible for me until I gave my life to Christ. Now, I’m not saying that everything is unicorns and rainbows because it’s not. My journey has just gotten a bit lighter because of my faith and belief in something bigger than me. No longer do things like being a perfectionist or introvert make me feel less of a person.
I realize that I am just who I was created to be. Using your words I now find “victory in every day I choose to live with purpose. That purpose isn’t crystal clear yet but the gist of it is to help others in any way that I can. Thank you for sharing this beautiful post.

    Your site is beautiful 🙂
