As we rounded the bluff that sunny blue skyed October day, The Ocean House stood tall with grandeur before us. Sparkling waves, and heaping colorful flowers swaying in the cool ocean breezes, were the backdrop for the yellow mansion that awaited us. I was instantly enamoured with this place as we were led into our balcony suite overlooking the Atlantic. This was Rhode Island at its finest. And, this was my dream New England Beach Getaway….
When we arrived at The Ocean House, we were immediately greeted with outstanding hospitality. We were escorted to our suite, which was prepared for us right down to the “W” initialed bed linens. A cheese tray with nuts and dried berries awaited us, along with a snack bar and beverage station that was an filled to the brim with candies and other goodies.
Sun beams peered through the draperies, as we toured our elegant space for the night. The bathroom alone took my breath away, and I couldn’t wait to take a long bubble bath after dinner in the generous soaking tub. I knew I was in heaven when I noticed that even the towels were delicately placed by the sinks and accessorized with sea shells.
We decided to take a tour of the grounds before heading downstairs to dine. We found the award winning Spa, and the gorgeous indoor pool. We walked down to the beach where brightly colored kites danced about in the crystal blue sky.
There was a party at the beach cabana with music and dancing accompanied by the waves lapping on the shoreline. It was simply breathtaking.
We noticed the bicycles precisely lined up against a stone wall, ready to escort us on a quick ride around this beach town. It reminded me of Mackinac Island, our usual vacation destination this time of year. Seeing the bicycles made me smile.
Then, we saw the Mercedes Benz convertibles parked neatly in their spots, not realizing that they were a complimentary amenity for guests at The Ocean House. We were too nervous to borrow one for the day. They were so luxurious compared to our worn out vehicle that had thankfully done so well on our trip thus far.
We watched the sun set over the horizon. And, as the day slowly turned to evening, we thoughfully dressed for our dinner reservation at The Seasons.
We were seated at a private table near a crackling fireplace. It was a cozy setting, with award winning farm-to-table cuisine…any food lovers dream. We enjoyed our romantic dinner, and finished with the grand finale of Creme Brûlée and the prettiest chocolates I’d ever seen. One chocolate was glittered with edible gold and another looked like the galaxy.
We returned to our room where we both enjoyed a long relaxing bath. My husband watched his beloved Red Wings play hockey, while soaking in the tub, eating malt balls, and sipping root beer. It wasn’t a site I won’t soon forget. He was in heaven.
I lounged in the chases nearby, enjoying the warmth of the fireplace while relishing in the beauty of that day. It was such an amazing end to our time in Rhode Island that began with a morning spent at the zoo, and ended with this Ocean House that had completely taken my breath away.
I had fallen in love with Rhode Island. And, I already couldn’t wait to come back.
We spent some time enjoying our private balcony that night. We stargazed and listened to the waves move across the sand. We became entranced by the lighthouses’ dancing gleam in the distance. It was so peaceful.
We didn’t want the day to end, and fought our bedtime as long as we could. But, when we did finally settle into our bed for the night, it was one of the most relaxing nights sleep we had on our 13 day road trip.
We awoke the next morning to sunshine and breakfast in bed. We packed our bags, and set back out on the road for our next destination. We had a date with a beluga whale that afternoon, and if it weren’t for our strong desire to meet him, I think we would have become permanent residents at The Ocean House.
We were given a parting gift, as we left. A blue Tiffany bag with more of The Ocean House’s beautiful Watercolor stationery enveloping our travel information and our receipt. Also in the beautiful bag was scrumptious caramel corn, the perfect road trip snack for our drive into Connecticut.
I can still close my eyes and picture this glorious place. It may be one of my favorite places on earth. Our travels through New England had quite honestly taken my breath away. Every new adventure at every turn, seemed to be better than the last.
“For her, the Ocean was more than a dream. It was a place she needed to visit to find herself. And when she returned to the city, you could see the sun in her eyes, the wind in her hair, and taste the infinite salt on her lips.” ~ Jose Chaves
I cannot wait to revisit The Ocean House. I’ve already begun planning our return trip. Here’s what I suggest doing in Rhode Island, some of which we still need to check off our Bucket Lists…
1. Meet Juno the Beluga Whale at Mystic Aquarium– we did the beluga whale encounter, and got to rub Juno’s tongue and pet his flubber. He even gave me a salt water facial. It was an experience that literally cannot be topped….my favorite thing we did our entire trip.
2. Visit the Zoo in Providence- the Roger Williams Park Zoo is the #1 attraction in Rhode Island, and who doesn’t love spending the day walking around a zoo?
3. Eat Doughboys & Chowder at Iggy’s– doughboys are a New England specialty, and are much like funnel cakes.
4. See the Mansions along the Cliffwalk in Newport
5. Take Fly Fishing Lessons at the Weekapaug Inn
6. Visit one of America’s oldest Cider Mills
7. Eat a Hamburger at Louis Lunch– the birthplace of the hamburger
8. Walk along the shore at Napatree Point
9. Spend the Day at the Oh! Spa
10. Take a Yachting Adventure in the Dandy
11. Go to a Lobster Boil on the Beach
12. Go for a Scenic Drive in a Mercedes Benz

“I love the peace the sea gives me, as if I’m made from the salt itself.”
Watch this mom’s visit to The Ocean House…I’d love an Arnold Palmer right about now. And, maybe I should add croquet to my Bucket List…
