How to Build A Cozy Winter Capsule Wardrobe

I am style challenged to say the least. Let me just say, I’m so glad that show, “What Not To Wear” is not on the air anymore for fear that Clinton Kelly would be showing up at my door any day now. I need a style intervention. So, when I heard about capsule wardrobes on Pinterest, I was immediatly intrigued. I am on a mission to simplify my life this year, and that includes building a more classic, yet comfy, wardrobe.

Here is my idea of a cozy, classy, and comfortable Winter Capsule Wardrobe that includes over 75 pieces that can be intermatched to make countless outfits and includes classic staples that can be worn from season to season.

Are you new to capsule wardrobes? Well, a quick search on Pinterest and you’ll have a ton of inspiration at your fingertips. Basically, the concept is to gather pieces of clothing that can be mixed and matched to create several outfits.

I talk about capsule wardrobes and how to get started in my cozy little ebook about the Danish tradition, hygge, because it is something that the Danes practice. They invest in high-quality clothing that is cozy and comfy, and includes only pieces they love to wear. They are also very minimalistic in their way of living, perhaps being one of the many reasons why they are the happiest people on the planet.

I sat down and gathered up some ideas of what I would like to have in my capsule wardrobe, particularly for the winter season, and this is what I came up with. You can tweak my capsule wardrobe if you’d like….add pieces or take some away.

The beauty of building a capsule wardrobe is that is can grow and change with you through in various seasons of life & I’m talking about only the weather. If you are a full-time working woman, add in more business attire. If you are a stay-at-home mom, build in more casual and easy to care for pieces so peanut butter fingers or muddy hands don’t get you down.

I practically live in scrubs and sweatpants most of the time, and long for a more stylish look even on my “lay-around-the-house” kind of days as well as staple pieces that can take me from date night to girls night out.

My color scheme for my winter capsule wardrobe includes neutrals of white, black, & gray with accent colors of blush, burgandy, & rose gold. So, here goes…

Tops & Sweaters

I added in a plethora of cardigans and sweaters since we live in Michigan which can be very cold and snowy for months of the year. There are all sorts of cardigans, such as boyfriend, draped, duster, etc and I love them all.

It’s good to have staples in neutral colors like black and gray and maybe a couple in your accent colors. Invest in comfy tees, pretty camisoles, and fitted shirts for layering under sweaters and cardigans for those cold winter months.

I added some tunics, sweatshirts, and hoodies to my ultimate winter collection so that even my stay-at-home relaxed look appears pulled together. And, I added some pretty blouses for date nights and girls night out!

I love to add some “investment pieces”, yet also get a bargain at shops like Old Navy, J Crew Factory, etc. I love the Jane App, an online boutique, for beautiful blouses, seasonal t-shirts, and cardigans at bargain prices. I’ve linked some of my favorite pieces below…

Bottoms

I think investing in a nice pair of jeans is the ticket to feeling stylish even in casual attire. Leggings and yoga pants are literally my favorite thing in the world, but I’ve also added in some dress pants for working days and black faux leather leggins for sexy date nights.

I believe these pieces are staples and can be carried over from fall to winter to even spring!

Accent Pieces

The colder winter months are the perfect time to add pretty accent pieces to your wardrobe including vests, dresses for outings, and outerwear.

  • Faux Fur Vest
  • Puffer/Quilted Vest x 3 {ivory, blush, burgundy, navy, etc}
  • Herringbone Puffer Vest
  • Black Staple Dress
  • Nice Dress for Events x 2
  • Down Puffer Coat
  • Wool Peacoat
  • Dress Coat
  • Rain Jacket

Shoes & Boots

Shoes, shoes, so many SHOES!!! Once again, these items can take you from season to season and are staples for any capsule wardrobe. I think I might need a bigger closet for this shoe collection… wink wink!

Now let’s talk about jewelry, scarves, bags, and cozy socks. Below are some of my favorite accessories for wintertime including Louis Vuitton Apple Watch bands {yes, you read that right!!}, fashion watches made of walnut wood & domed sapphire glass, & comfy blanket scarves.

I love, love, LOVE these dainty charm necklaces too, from Bryan Anthony’s {pictured above}. My favorite is the “Always In My Heart” necklace, which is the perfect sentiment for anyone who has lost a child or experienced an infant loss or miscarriage. Every piece of jewelry comes with a sweet message,

“Sometimes in life there are losses. Losses that can never really be replaced. Losing you has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to live with. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. I wasn’t ready to let you leave. I would give anything for just one more day, just one more second. But I’ve learned to trust in unconditional love. Because the one profound thing about death is that love never dies. Some bonds cannot be broken. Because even though you’re not physically here, your heart is — it lives on within me. I carry your heart inside mine. I carry it on days when I discover something new. I carry it on days when beauty unfolds in the most unexpected places. I carry it on days when I find courage to heal and to grow. I carry it with me — always. Someday we will meet again — and we will no longer be separated by time or space. But until that day, I’ll find comfort in knowing that you are still with me. Your heart safely tucked inside mine. Some hearts just belong together and nothing will ever change that. I loved you then. I love you now. Always did. Always will. Forever in my mind. Forever in my heart. I will carry you.”
