8 Simple Ways To Create A Cozy Nursery

Today I’d love to introduce you to a new-to-me decorating style called ‘lagom’ and how these decor concepts can help you create a cozy nursery haven for your brand new baby.  A huge thank you to Emma from Invaluable.com for sharing this Swedish decorating concept with me.  For all you hygge fans among us, you are going to love lagom!  I’m so excited to share it with you.

If you love hygge and love to decorate your home with this lifestyle in mind, then you will love lagom, a Swedish concept meaning “not too little, not too much”.  Similar to hygge-living, lagom is about balance and appreciating both natural things and human-made things.
With this guide to lagom decor from Invaluable, you can easily add lagom elements not only into your nursery but also in your entire home.  There are eight tips to get you started, many of which are easy to implement to create the coziest of havens for you and your baby to enjoy.
For instance, bring nature into your nursery, incorporate soft lighting, and give objects breathing room so you can appreciate their unique beauty.  Add natural elements like wooden tables, and earthy soothing tones and artwork.  With just a few quick touches you can make your baby’s first home a relaxing haven.
Here are 8 Lagom Decor tips to get you started…

1. Declutter Your Nursery Space

Begin with just the basics that you need in a nursery….a crib, a dresser/changing table, and a cozy rocking chair for late night snuggles and feedings.  Try not to clutter your baby’s first home with unnecessary items.  Allow the furniture space to breathe so that you can truly appreciate them.

2. Choose a White or Gray Wall Color

Choosing a neutral wall color allows you to add pops of color throughout your baby’s nursery in blankets, crib sheets, artwork, and accessories.  This also allows your nursery space to be transformed from one baby to the next with simple decor elements.

I love this example nursery pictured below. It’s very lagom with its varying textures on the wall, the rug, and the beautiful curtains that allow that natural light to come flooding in {another concept we’ll cover in just a second}.  And, I’m sure that the gorgeous gold chandelier illuminates with a soft, warm glow in the evenings.  There are natural elements like the wooden table and hanging plants.  And as you can see, the solid white walls create the perfect backdrop for the varying hues of blue.

3. Bring Nature Into Your Nursery

Don’t be afraid to add a little nature to your nursery.  Adding plants inside your home help to clean the air and make your family and your space a bit healthier.  So why wouldn’t you add those benefits to baby’s nursery?

4. Let in Natural Light

Soften windows with white sheer drapes that allow natural light to pour into baby’s space.  Here’s a wonderful example nursery from the blog, Mindfully Gray, my new favorite blog & Instagram to drool over.  I love how Jamie incorporated beautiful drapes, nature, wooden elements, artwork, and a rug into their nursery.  It’s absolutely gorgeous and very lagom, isn’t it?

5. Give Objects Room to Breathe

Try not to clutter baby’s nursery with too many objects, toys, and furniture.  Pick items that you love or that are sentimental and meaningful.  Focus on simplicity in your nursery design and fill baby’s space with wonderful things as he or she grows.

6. Use Lighting to Create a Soft Glow

Traditionally in Lagom-style, I’d encourage you to splatter your home with candles, but since we are talking about baby’s space let’s talk about adding lighting that creates a soft glow.  When you are rocking baby to sleep in the wee hours of the morning, you will truly appreciate soft lighting in your nursery.  Add lamps, nightlights, and perhaps a gorgeous ceiling mounted chandelier like these beautiful examples from Pottery Barn Kids.

7. Add Soft, Textural Rugs

Ground baby’s space with a soft, textural rug.  Lagom-style suggests replacing carpet with hardwood floors and gorgeous rugs because the mixture of elements creates such a gorgeous space.  But, if you are not in the market to change out your flooring, add a beautiful rug over the carpet.  A rug defines the space and adds additional color and pattern, and gives baby a clean space to play as he or she grows.

8. Mix Vintage with Modern Pieces

I don’t know about you, but I love a mixture of new and old pieces in a space.  Let’s bring some vintage inspiration into baby’s nursery by adding some old to the brand new…or at least some pieces that look classic.

I love the mixture of whimsy and vintage in this absolutely gorgeous nursery for a sweet little miss named, Colette.  You can shop her nursery at Project Nursery…I love the classic, vintage-looking wallpaper and bonnets mixed with a fun, playful teepee for baby Colette to get cozy and read a book with mommy.
