Things To Consider When Choosing A Bottle For Your Baby…

Don’t Buy In Bulk

Babies can be picky little things. Hard to imagine, I know. Purchase a few different types of bottles to try, and once you find one that suits your baby’s needs, return the others. Don’t buy a ton of one type of bottle just in case you don’t like it.

Check Breastpump Compatibility

If you plan to pump and feed, check for compatibility between your bottles and your pump type. Most bottle companies sell adapters so you can easily screw your bottles onto the pump.

Check for Anti-Colic Features

The less air that enters baby’s tummy the better, especially if you plan to still breast feed. Babies don’t suck air in when they’re breast feeding, that’s why all the bottles I’ve listed below feature anti-colic features to give babies a similar experience to breastfeeding.

Choose Your Material

Below I’ve shared bottles made from various materials from plastic, to silicone, to glass. You get to choose which material suits your baby and your budget best.

Consider Ease of Clean

Let’s be honest, washing bottles can be a real pain in the neck, so that’s why I’ve included bottles that are easy to clean as dishwasher safe. No new mom needs anything else to be complicated and take time away from baby snuggles.

Consider Price

Also, the bottles I’ve listed below that are best for breastfed babies, fit every budget imaginable. Most of these companies you’ve heard of before and others may be new to you. All of them are amazing and all are available on Amazon, so choose one that best fits your budget.

What A Breastfed Baby Wants In A Bottle…

There are a few things that babies would say they look for in a bottle, if they could talk of course. All of these parents should consider as well when choosing a bottle for their baby…

The Feel

Simply put, the more the bottle feels like a breast the better, especially for babies who will transition between breast and bottle throughout the day.

The Nipple

All of these bottles feature special nipples made to look and feel like a real breast. This lessens the risk of nipple confusion as you begin to introduce a bottle to your baby.

The Flow

These bottles also come in various nipple flows so that your baby isn’t suddenly drowning in breastmilk/formula. The flow is much closer to that of a breast making it easier for them to feed.

The Shape

You’ll also notice various shapes and sizes of bottles below. Choose which one fits your baby best. It’s awesome that bottle companies have expanded their horizons and develop unique shapes to help support breastfeeding, don’t you think?

When To Introduce Bottles To Your Breastfed Baby…

Many breastfeeding moms plan to offer a bottle to their babies for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you want to introduce bottles so dad can help with feedings, or because you plan to go back to work. And, then there are some moms that prefer to pump their breast milk and feed from a bottle versus putting baby to breast.

Whatever your reason, try to exclusively breast feed without introducing a bottle for the first couple of weeks. The more stimulation at your breasts the better. This will not only help you bond with your baby, but it will also help you establish a good milk supply.

If you are unable to do this, or want to give a bottle sooner that’s ok. The main point is not to wait too long. After a couple of weeks, try to give your baby a bottle. Sometimes if you wait too long, your baby will have trouble taking a bottle because they prefer your breast….and that’s a hard problem to solve.
